Check, check (2024)
Check, check was exhibited as the opening performance of the performance series A Countercommons (The Trouble with Trouble), at University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The work was commissioned by the Institute for Improvisational Infrastructures, a project headed by artist Conrad Cheung focused on building experimental, impermanent architecture, in this case a temporary stage altering a terrace walkway. I was to create work to be performed during the construction of the stage. Animatronic safety cones wander the stage as it is being assembled, checking, listening to, and assessing it.
Check, Check is a literal investigation of the stage at the center and periphery of A Countercommons (The Trouble with Trouble). Mimicking the fluidity of the stage as object, site, and tool, the safety cones’ performance is both a finale of the stage’s construction and an overture to the performances it hosted throughout the week.
